Background: Cognitive warfare, as a novel strategic instrument, focuses on influencing human perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors and has had far-reaching implications for global conflicts in the digital age. Going beyond the conventional boundaries of traditional warfare, cognitive warfare seeks to shape and ultimately control the cognitive domain and influence the minds of target populations. Objective: This study examines the theoretical foundations and genealogy of cognitive warfare, with particular emphasis on U.S. cognitive threats against Iran, in order to identify the dimensions of these threats and potential countermeasures.Methodology: This qualitative study employs a descriptive-analytical approach and is based on library research and content analysis of authoritative Persian- and English-language sources. The study population comprises historical, theoretical, and contemporary texts related to cognitive warfare, while data were collected through documentary analysis. Results: The findings indicate that cognitive warfare has roots extending back to antiquity and that, in the contemporary era, the United States has targeted Iran through the use of social media, sanctions, and disinformation, seeking to influence societal beliefs and attitudes and widen the gap between the public and the governing system. These threats pose significant challenges to Iran’s national security and necessitate the development of intelligent and adaptive defense strategies.
