[English]

Developments in the international system and shifts in the balance of power at regional and global levels have created new opportunities for expanding cooperation and strategic convergence among states. In this context, relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation have broadened in scope in recent years, becoming an important component of regional and international dynamics. Under these circumstances, strategic convergence between Iran and Russia has also influenced the security and geopolitical dynamics of the region. The present study aims to identify and enumerate the factors influencing strategic convergence between the two countries and to examine their impact on the national security of the Islamic Republic of Iran. To this end, the study employs a descriptive–analytical survey research method. Based on the research variables, a matrix-format questionnaire with 18 × 5 dimensions was developed and distributed to a statistical population comprising 40 experts and specialists in the relevant field, using a census approach. The findings indicate that, among the factors contributing to strategic convergence between Iran and Russia, three factors exert the greatest influence on the national security of the Islamic Republic of Iran at different levels. At the international level, the most influential factor is “structural opposition to U.S. hegemony and the unipolar international order, coupled with the two countries’ shared opposition to U.S. unilateralism.” At the regional level, it is “strategic cooperation between Iran and Russia in maintaining peace, stability, and regional security arrangements, as well as containing the influence of regional and extra-regional powers and their allies (including the United States, Türkiye, and Israel).” At the bilateral level, the most influential factor is “military and defense cooperation between Iran and Russia, including cooperation in armaments.” These findings underscore the need for Iranian policymakers to exercise prudence, vigilance, and strategic foresight in effectively leveraging this strategic convergence.
